Bar and Restaurant Urca

The history of the Bar and Restaurant Urca, which begins in 1939, is marked by intense relationship with the city and the facts of the country. During the WWII, for example, faced difficult times. The mezzanine area, which today runs the restaurant, was destroyed by people who stormed angered by the fact that their owners were Germans. Fears of new attacks has led to the sale of the business. Since that time the mezzanine floor and, consequently, the restaurant was closed. Only the bar downstairs has continued to operate.

At the time of the Cassino da Urca and also the nostalgic TV Tupi, over the 50’s to 80’s, renowned artists took their meals or "warming up" before their presentations at Bar Urca. Another source of loyal customers is the Fort St. John, which once housed about 1,000 troops with men and now holds public facilities such as the Army physical training centre (Centro de Capacitação Física do Exército and the War College (ESG – Escola Superior de Guerra).

In 1972 Mr. Gomescame to Urca from Ipanema, where he sold the Café Esplendor, better known as Gomes' Bar, to the then mega builder Sergio Dourado build the building of the Visconde de Piraja St. 550. Your Gomes was enchanted with the neighborhood and did not hesitate to enter as a partner.
Since then printed his style of listening to customers and incorporate suggestions. The reopening of the restaurant in 1998, is one example. It started with one customer, a army general in service at Fort St. John, asking to be served on the mezzanine floor, then closed for a short meeting. From then became his usual meetings with friends, in space, and gradually spread information and attracted other patrons. So gradually, the restaurant on the mezzanine floor of the building was reborn Tabajara (name that honors the Club Tabajara, existing in the 30s in a neighboring place) theshoresofthe bay.
 

The team's Bar & Restaurant Urca is led by Mr. Gomes, the oldest merchant and owner of bar and restaurant operating in Rio de Janeiro. Ahead of the business since 1972, now shares with two other Armandos, the son and grandson, management and administration.

Today the Bar & Restaurant Urca is known for its quality dishes and snacks, but the quality of their care sympathy and dedication of our team of waiters is one of his trademarks. They all follow the principle of the owners and dedicated whenever possible, a time to talk, to hear and tell stories.
